A Wardrobe For Shadowing

You've done your part and found your dream shadowing position at the hospital. You're all excited for your first day and you have your outfit laid out the night before. But, pause! What is that outfit?

Inevitably, every year we see a student shadowing us dressed uncomfortably with aching heel by the end of clinic. And we have some suggestions for that unlucky students and you.

Always dress professional. While this could mean wearing trousers and a formal shirt, it can also mean wearing scrubs. Always check with the preceptor/ your attending physician to see if there's any rules on what scrub color you can wear to the office. Some departments have a specific color assigned to them and you don't want to wear the wrong color and stick out like a sore thumb.

If you're told you need to wear formals, we suggest neutral , non-flashy colors for a formal shirt. A blazer may be necessary as well. Formal pants are always preferred with flat footware that is comfortable to walk in (don't underestimate the length of a hospital hallway).

Always try on your new clothes for shadowing to check for tags and stickers, and show up looking professional , clean, and ready to learn.
